Get Out in Nature This Summer near Alvin, Texas

One unexpected benefit of this past year is having more opportunities to out and appreciate nature’s wide-open spaces. Here in Alvin, we’ve got a ton of different opportunities to experience the outdoors. We’ve rounded up the best places to get outside in and around Alvin, Texas. All of these destinations are within 30 miles of Alvin RV Resort.

Camp Mohawk County Park. Located between Alvin and Angleton, this large day-use park is in a lovely wooded environment along Chocolate Bayou. Bring the family for a picnic, as there is a covered pavilion, picnic tables with grills, a lake for canoeing or kayaking, a playground and basketball court, restrooms, and great hiking trails.

Texas City Prairie Preserve. This huge, 2,303-acre natural preserve was established to restore and revitalize coastal habitats and the species that live here. Along with immense beauty, you will see migratory birds such as brown pelicans, white ibis, peregrine falcons, white-tailed hawk, Forster’s terns, and seaside sparrows. Native plants come alive and the Conservancy works to enhance coastal resilience and is a model for prairie restoration.

Brazos Bend State Park. Bring your walking shoes, binoculars, and camera! This is an outdoor activity paradise where you can hike, picnic, fish, geocache, and horseback ride. Their nature center informs visitors about the park and its varied residents. See their website if you’d like to reserve a picnic pavilion or group hall for large gatherings.

Bayou Wildlife Zoo. One of the best places in the area to take the kiddos. Located right in Alvin, get up close and personal with animals from all over the world. Over 60 species of wildlife and more than 500 animals make for a fun-filled day. Take the guided tram tour through 85 acres of natural habitat to safely encounter free-roaming animals and birds in the park.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge.  Located 25 miles south of the RV resort, this is part of three national wildlife refuges in the area and serves as an endpoint of the Central Flyway for waterfowl in winter, and an entry point for neotropical migratory songbirds. Look for alligators year-round, while Roseate spoonbills capture the pink glow of sunrise in their wings in flight.

Resoft County Park. Six miles north of the RV resort is this fantastic 80-acre park full of playgrounds, soccer fields, horseshoes, basketball courts, volleyball nets, fishing pond, and trails galore. For the disc golf lover, there is also a nine-basket course! And did we mention the tree house in the playground?

Delores Fenwick Nature Center. Nearby Pearland is home to a new environmental education facility, with an outdoor pavilion providing an opportunity for outdoor learning. With interactive exhibits, live animal exhibits, and 2 miles of walking trails, this is sure to get youngers excited about the natural world.

The Trail at John Hargrove Environmental Complex. A popular trail just north in Pearland, you’ll find over 175 acres of gorgeous parkland with miles of walking, jogging, hiking, and biking trails. Tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, dog parks, and picnic tables are just the beginning. A state-of-the-art swimming pool completes the complex.
